This project was inspired by an idea that if children had a positive connection with the natural world that when they grew up they would be more invested in caring about the state of the climate. This toy explores the natural process of metamorphosis, changing from a caterpillar stuffed animal into a butterfly cape that can be worn. This toy has been named the flutterby, which is a playful spoonerism, and is made to support imaginary play and inspire an interest in nature. This project was made out of the scrap offcuts from the production of organic cotton children's clothing in Toronto. The patchwork design of the wings highlights the material source and references the comfort of a quilt. The toy is a self contained comfort object, play mate, and costume.
